in a pocket book format for
ease of use, this is a truly
unique and practical guide giving accurate metric equivalents and
conversion factors for no fewer than 10,000 scientific units as well as
detailed descriptions of over two thousand, covering the full range of
science, technology, and medicine. Dr. Francois Cardarelli has spent
many years building up this complete range of U.S. customary, British
Imperial, conventional metric, historic systems and SI units. The book
contains expanded conversion charts and tables which are readily
referenced and coloured tabs denote the different sections while a
slot-in user guide acts as a bookmark. The appendices contain lists of
national and international standardization organizations and there is
also an English-French lexicon of terms. In addition, a detailed
bibliography completes this comprehensive guide.

LA RECHERCHE No. 298 (Mai 1997)
«Numerous
reference works provide
conversion tables between SI and British and American units. This title
does that very well. But this work translated from French has a unique
feature: its sections on ancient and obsolete weights and measures and
those for obsolete national and regional systems. For major European
and Asian cultures and for Egypt the author has provided units of
length, area, weight, and dry and liquid capacity. Conversion tables
make up most of the book. In an easy-to-read format, it describes about
2,000 units, giving for each its name, symbol, physical quantity,
dimension, conversion factor, and a variety of notes and definitions.
In addition to formal names for units, the author provides useful
explanatory text, scholarly references for further information, and
such tables as "Old Alchemical Symbols" and "Old Symbols Used in the
British System." Economic historians, scholars in religion, and history
students will find this a useful and comprehensive source. An excellent
addition to scholarly reference collections at a modest cost.»
